Pillar in designing

One of the most common expresion which is widely use to desribe design of a car is Pillar or Shaft. Sometimes in articles it refer that Pillar C of a car is nicely designed or whatever. Generally pillar are what hold the glass and windshield in between. Depend on the type of car a car can has two to four Pillars.

Pillar are of the most difficult task in designing a new vehicle because they must fullfill diffrent requirments:
1- It's very important that pillar gives nice appearence to car. If it gets too thick then it loose it's functionality for being nice.
2-It's imporant to keep it wide enough in case of accidents. When the car rollover all of the weight of car has to be hold by it's pillar and if it gets too narrow then it would not have enough strength.
3-Angle and thickness of pillar should not block the visibility of outside. If pillar place in wrong angle or get too thich it block some parts of outside environment view which this can be lead to accidents.

Pillars are called in sequence A,B,C and/or D.

Usually three pillars are the most common way for a sedan car but sometimes depend on the design of car it may reduce to only two pillars which technically is difficult to build and design these cars and usually car manufacturer with great technology can only cope with it. Mercedes Benz CL is my favorite design.
